Searchify: Calendar search

February 28th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Searchify’s calendar search feature searches your calendar and brings back any events that match.

To use it, type the keyword cal followed by the words you want to search for.  If you don’t want to type “cal” every time, you can change or remove that keyword in Searchify Settings.

Calendar search brings back both past events and future events.  In Searchify Settings you can set how far back in the past and future you want it to look – the default for this is one year in the past and two years in the future.

You can also choose in the settings how many results should be brought back, and whether or not you want the location field to be searched as well as the event titles.

It doesn’t seem to support past events. Is this correct? Have you tried this feature recently?

It should do. By default Searchify looks one year into the past for event searches. If you want to look further back than that, you can change this in Searchify Settings.

If it’s still not bringing back results… can you see future events? What kind of calendar are you trying to search?

each time I enter cal followed by the search word it goes to the google web. I normally use the Corporate Calander, but I did put a test date in the Google calander and still doesn’t seem to notice.

    @Al Babcock
Are you pressing return or the magnifying glass icon after entering you’re query? Don’t! Just type your query and wait for results to appear under what you typed.

If you press return after typing you’ll just get a Google web search, with no Quick Search Box features so no Searchify.

If I type Corporate Cal it opens the Corporate Calendar. If I type Corporate Cal {proper name} it goes to google search page. All of this without hitting return or the magnifying glass. Happens the same with the google calander. Should I deleat and re-install the program?

Nice app, thank you.. I was hoping I could add an entry to the calendar with the voice input app, but that doesn’t do it.. I guess it adds a CR to whatever you speak because voice input yields only web results… but still a handy app and I agree it should be a stock app

    Thank you for your enterprise

I am changing from an old TI organizer, with a totally straightforward search capability within its calendar entries (and others, of course), and was disappointed when the Verizon people told me the Droid would not do that. Then I found and installed Searchify, but I still cannot make it work. As a previous writer found, having (I think) adjusted the settings, and checked “calendar search”, when I make any entry in the quick search box, whether starting with “cal” or not, the system searches not in the calendar but the internet via Google. What am I missing?

Kenneth, this is happening because you’re pressing return after entering your search query – don’t! Just type your query “cal something” and wait… results should appear below the search box.

(If you don’t want to have to type “cal”, you can remove this keyword in Searchify Settings.)

I have only just found your reply, for which I thank you. Yes, I had discovered by trial and error that the key was not pressing the search button but letting the program do its own thing; pressing the search button always goes straight to Google. However, sometimes that works, and sometimes not, when it insists instead on going to a Google search. Perhaps that is in some way my fault but it is very annoying.

Since browsers by definition have excellent search capabilities, and any browser on a Droid will certainly be capable of searching on Google, I don’t see what virtue there is in replicating that capability in Searchify. Would it not be better, at least as an option, to make Searchify search anything selected EXCEPT via Google. Then to search your calendar items you could use the intuitive but at present incorrect pressing of the search button.

Hi Ken. Thanks for your comments.

Searchify doesn’t provide any google search functionality so it doesn’t replicate anything from Google. Searchify provides only the features that you can see in Searchify Settings.

The thing is the Quick Search Box on your phone provides Google functions as well as Searchify ones. When you type in a query you’ll see results below and you can tell which ones are from Searchify because they’ll have the Searchify icon. Other ones with just a magnifying glass are Google search suggestions provided by Google.

Also, I should say that there’s no way to make pressing return after typing your query work with Searchify. The quick search box is designed so that pressing return always opens a web page to search Google.

    Hi Olilan,

I have to hand it to you, you’ve succeeded in something no App has before you (as far as I know). I can finally search my Hebrew entries in the calendar.
It does take time, sometimes it seems like it won’t find anything, but it works.
I’ll recommend it in the Android Help Forum.

I have been trying for days and searching your directions to no avail. I have a DROID X and I installed searchify to search my calendar. I pressed the search button on the bottom on the phone next to the return arrow and the search box comes up I have typed everything from what I was looking for to adding the work CAL to adding the word calendar and none of my calendar events come up. I went to my settings and made sure Searchify was on and also to Searchify settings and made sure the Calendar was on. Still nothing comes up from my calendar – it ALWAYS goes to the web for instance I typed “hair” for my hair appointments and it goes to the web under items regarding hair and never to my calendar

Don’t press return after typing your query – that does a Google search. Just type and wait, and the results will appear.

    Great program, 3 questions
    1) can you add “search in past : ALL” and “search in future : ALL” instead of the limit of 4 years. I know 4 years is a lot, but I have 9 years on it.
    2) It’s hard to knwo when the search is over. Is there a way to know when everyhting is found?
    3) Will there be an option to search in Contacts?
